It was 2 years ago when I started as a junior stylist in a salon helping the qualified hairdressers with pretty much anything they needed. Although it was enjoyable most of the time, I didn't see it to be my career long term. As time went on and I saw more of salon life, my interest in becoming a stylist grew – I was amazed at what the senior stylists could do and how they created styles using their imagination and skills. Because I wanted to learn more I joined an academy and started my training as a hairdresser.
Changes in circumstances meant that I had to relocate and unfortunately had to leave my job. Once settled in Peterborough, I knew I wanted to work in a salon again and looked locally for positions of junior stylist and came across the position advertised at Serenity Loves. Keen to get back in to working in a salon doing what I enjoy, I sent in my CV and applied for the position, and shortly after received the phone call asking me to come for an interview – I was really happy!
Before my interview I made sure I looked the part making sure when styling my hair and make-up it looked professional. I took care not to overdo the makeup but kept it simple to make a good impression for the customers and the existing staff. I knew that Serenity Loves had an onsite playroom so I didn't want to look too ‘made-up’ in front of the mothers or children. When I arrived at the salon the person conducting the interview welcomed me and took me to the staff room for my interview. Throughout the interview she was friendly and I was made to feel at ease – I could see that people skills and customer service was a high priority. I was given a probation period to see if I liked the job and fitted in with the team and at the end of it, was offered the full time position.
During my level 2 training I received lots of support from the team at Serenity Loves. They helped me to learn new techniques in hairdressing and styling and after a while I was able to start working with a small number of clients by myself. Because I am working towards my qualifications I started by performing simple treatments and blow drying, working my way up to more complicated styles and treatments – because I am still working towards my full qualification I am able to give my customers a discount of 20% off their hair services.
I have learned so much from the team at Serenity Loves; the importance of great customer service and teamwork of the stylists as well as the techniques and products used. My confidence on the salon floor is growing every week and I am grateful for the opportunity to work in such a great environment.
